The beginning of the last decade of the „dark“ 20th century had been particularly hard for Croatia. The newly independent and democratic Croatia was under attack by the joint forces of the Serbian-controlled (so-called) Yugoslav People’s Army (JNA), Serb paramilitary units from Bosnia and Herzegovina and Montenegro and the Serb separatists of Croatia. During the War of Croatian Independence Dubrovnik was besieged by the so-called Yugoslav Army and Serb paramilitary units from Serb-held areas of BiH and Montenegro. From autumn 1991 till late spring 1992 Dubrovnik was surrounded and under bombardments, while its water and electricity supply had been cut-off. In this tour you will learn why did the communist Yugoslavia fall apart and why did the war start in the first place. Then you will learn more how Dubrovnik, though badly damaged, managed to withstand the siege. Therefore you will find out more about military operations but also how civilians managed to survive under the siege and bombardments of the Serbian forces.
